Detoxification Potential
The liver is the second largest organ and the largest gland in the body and is located on the right side in the upper abdomen, below the diaphragm. It is capable of regeneration and as little as a quarter of remaining liver can regenerate into a whole liver again. About 67% of the liver can grow back within a week. The liver have multiple functions, primarily carried out by hepatocytes, i.e. liver cells. The liver is responsible for and involved in:
- carbohydrate metabolism
- protein metabolism
- lipid metabolism
- produces and excretes bile for emulsifying fats
- breakdown of hormones like oestrogen, cortisol and insulin
- breaks down toxic substances
- drug metabolism
- converts ammonia to uria
- Stores multiple substances, like glucose, Vitamin B12, iron and copper
- immunology, it acts as a sieve for antigens
Compromised liver functioning can lead to allergies, inflammatory conditions, build-up of toxins, metabolic disorders and liver congestion plays a key role in conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/M.E.), inflammatory disease like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis, chronic infections, hormonal imbalances and digestive disturbances.
Symptoms |
The symptoms associated with liver congestion usually has a gradual, insidious onset over a period of months to years and are indicators that toxicity in the body is reaching higher levels than the liver can neutralise. These symptoms include:
- Recurrent or chronic headaches or migraines
- Constant, persistent, severe chronic fatigue
- Cognitive impairment / Brainfog (poor concentration and memory, mood swings, irritability)
- Alcohol Intolerance
- Allergies, food intolerances and sensitivities
- General Medication Sensitivity
- Gastrointestinal symptoms: indigestion, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, bloating, light stools, constipation, flatulence
- Subjective muscle weakness
- Paraesthesias (numbness and tingling sensations)
- Tinnitus
- Tremors
- Drowsiness
- Psychiatric: post-natal depression, anxiety, hallucinations, dissociation, paranoia, anger outbursts, resentful, worrier, tense, negative, blames others
- Difficulty loosing or gaining weight appropriately
- Frequent or urgent urination
- Bitter or metallic taste in your mouth or a furry tongue
- Seeing brilliant flashes light
- Breast soreness due to the body's inability to break down oestrogen
- Persistent infections
- Abnormal fat metabolism creating an intolerance for fatty foods
- Prolonged skin blanching, distended or varicose veins
- Jaundice
- Muddy complexion with pasty skin, erythema (mild rash), acne
- Lymphatic congestion, oedema and swollen ankles
- Kidney disease
- Hypoglycaemia
- Tachycardia, hypertension
